Changing your name after marriage in Ohio follows the same foundational sequence as most states: Social Security Administration first, Ohio BMV second, everything else after. The order matters because downstream agencies verify your identity against your SSA record — if SSA hasn't been updated, the BMV update won't go through cleanly.

Before You Start: Get Your Certified Copies

You'll need certified copies of your Ohio marriage certificate from the Probate Court that issued your license. Order 3–4 copies — they cost approximately $4–$7 each, and you'll need them for multiple agencies. Do not start the name change process before you have these in hand.

See the certified copy guide for details on how to order from each Ohio county Probate Court.

Step 1 — Social Security Administration

This is always first. Every other agency follows SSA's lead.

Visit your nearest SSA office in person. You can schedule an appointment at ssa.gov (strongly recommended — walk-in wait times can be long). Bring:

  • Certified copy of your Ohio marriage certificate
  • Your current government-issued photo ID
  • Completed Form SS-5 (Application for a Social Security Card — available at ssa.gov or at the office)

SSA updates your record immediately and mails a new card with your updated name in 10–14 business days. Your Social Security number doesn't change. You don't need to wait for the new card to arrive before visiting the BMV — SSA's database updates right away, which is what the BMV checks.

Step 2 — Ohio BMV (Driver's License)

Visit an Ohio BMV Deputy Registrar location. Find your nearest office at bmv.ohio.gov. Bring:

  • Your current Ohio driver's license
  • Certified copy of your marriage certificate
  • Proof of updated SSA record (your updated SS card if it has arrived, or a confirmation letter from SSA)
  • Fee: approximately $26.00 for a standard 4-year license renewal with name change
Ohio REAL ID: Ohio issues REAL ID-compliant licenses. If your current license is REAL ID-compliant and you're updating your name, confirm with the BMV what additional documents you may need to maintain your REAL ID status. You may need to bring a birth certificate or passport in addition to the marriage certificate.

The BMV will issue a temporary paper license immediately. Your new plastic license arrives by mail in about 7–10 business days.

Step 3 — U.S. Passport

Passport name updates follow federal rules, not Ohio's. The process is the same as any state:

  • Passport less than 1 year old: Form DS-5504, free, by mail. Include the original passport + certified marriage certificate.
  • Passport 1–15 years old: Form DS-82 renewal by mail. Fee approximately $130–$160.
  • Passport over 15 years old or issued before age 16: Apply in person (Form DS-11) at a passport acceptance facility. Many post offices and county clerks serve as acceptance facilities.

If you have upcoming international travel, plan accordingly. A routine DS-82 takes 6–8 weeks; expedited is 2–3 weeks but costs extra.

Step 4 — Employer / Payroll

Update your name with your HR department as soon as your SSA record is updated. Bring your updated Social Security card (or confirmation) and your marriage certificate. Your employer will need to update:

  • W-4 (federal tax withholding)
  • Direct deposit records
  • Benefits enrollment (health, dental, vision, FSA/HSA)
  • 401(k) / retirement account beneficiaries

Step 5 — Banks and Financial Accounts

Ohio banks typically require your updated driver's license plus a certified marriage certificate for a name change. Visit your bank in person for checking and savings accounts. For credit cards, call the number on the back of the card — many issuers allow a name change by phone with the marriage certificate information.

Step 6 — Ohio Voter Registration

Update your voter registration at OhioVoterRegistration.sos.state.oh.us or in person at your county Board of Elections. Bring your updated driver's license. Registration updates must be completed at least 30 days before an election to take effect for that election.

Step 7 — Everything Else

  • Health, auto, and home/renters insurance
  • Vehicle title — Ohio BMV handles this; bring your current title and updated license
  • Professional licenses (Ohio licensing boards each have their own process)
  • Life insurance and investment accounts
  • Will and estate documents
  • Email, subscriptions, and online accounts
